A league is a single event played over several sessions, usually spread across several weeks. In Competition Control, the whole league lives in one event file. Each session gets its own schedule and match list, while the team list, awards, and rankings carry across every session. Keep the same event file for the entire league and back it up between sessions, because the rankings depend on every session being in one file.

Leagues are managed on the League step in Event Setup. The step appears after Fields once you check League on the General step. While the box is unchecked, the event has a single session that you never see, and the step's Next button reads Requires event to be configured as a league. Only the Admin role can open Event Setup. See Roles and Permissions.

See the Qualifying Criteria for RECF Robotics Programs section on leagues for the rules on running a league that qualifies teams to higher-level events.

Sessions and the Active Session

Every event has an active session. The Schedule and Creating Matches steps show and create blocks and matches for the active session only, and blocks you add while the wrong session is active stay attached to that session. Check-in and inspection status is also recorded per session. Marking a team Present in one session does not carry over to the next, so at the start of each session mark every attending team present (or pass them through inspection) so they are included when teams are assigned to that session's matches. See Team Check In and Inspection.

The team list and the awards belong to the event as a whole, not to a session. Import the full list of teams registered for the league once. See Teams and Awards.

Setting Up a League

  1. On the General step, check League.
  2. Click Next: Fields, add your fields, then click Next: League.
  3. Click Add Session. A session named New Session is added, made the active session, and its name is selected for editing.
  4. Type a name for the session, such as the date or "Session 1", and click or tab out of the field to save it. Naming sessions by date makes the Active Session list easy to read when you return weeks later.
  5. Repeat for each session in your league, or add sessions one at a time as the league progresses.
  6. In Active Session, choose the session you are about to run. Changing the selection switches every session-specific page immediately.
  7. Continue through Teams, Awards, Schedule, and Matches as you would for a standalone tournament. The schedule and matches you create belong to the active session.
Configuring league sessions

To delete a session, click its trash button and confirm. The button is disabled for the active session and when only one session exists, so make another session active first.

Important

Deleting a session also deletes its matches, schedule blocks, and check-in and inspection records. A session that has any saved match scores cannot be deleted. If the host computer refuses, a notice titled Could Not Delete Session explains why.

Before Each Session

  1. Open Event Setup and choose League.
  2. In Active Session, choose the session for the day.
  3. On the Schedule step, add match blocks for the session.
  4. On the Matches step, click Create Matches.
  5. As teams arrive, mark them Present on the check-in page. Teams that are not present for a session are left out when teams are assigned to that session's matches.
Schedule matches for a league

Note

The estimated practice and qualification matches per team on the Schedule step are based on the total number of registered teams, not the number marked present for the current session. If many teams are absent, each present team plays more matches than the estimate. When teams are assigned to matches, Competition Control may drop matches at the end of the session that are not needed for the teams present.

Alliance Rankings Across Sessions

In a league, teams are ranked across every session by the ranking points they earn per match, regardless of how many sessions they attend. Teams that take part in fewer than 60% of the sessions are ranked below teams that meet the threshold.

A team that is ranked lower for missing sessions is marked Low participation on the host computer's Rankings page, with a note showing how many sessions it attended. This flag is not shown on audience display screens.

Teams with low participation are marked in the rankings screen

Remarks

Unchecking League on the General step hides the League step but does not delete any sessions. Check it again and your sessions are still there.
