A field is a physical competition area at your venue. On the Fields step of Event Setup you tell Competition Control how many fields you have, what each one is called, and whether it hosts alliance matches or solo matches. Matches are spread across your fields when the match list is created, and every field gets its own display group so you can put a screen beside it.

The Fields step needs the Admin role, and it stays disabled until you have saved an event name and chosen a program on the General step. See Event Setup.

Adding Fields

  1. Click Add Field. A new row appears named New Field with Field Type set to Alliance, and the name is selected ready for typing.
  2. Type the field's name, such as "Field 1" or "Red Field", and click or tab out of the box. The name saves when you leave it. A blank name is refused with Field name must be provided. under the heading Could Not Save Field.
  3. If this field will host solo matches instead of alliance matches, change Field Type to Solo. The change saves when you leave the box.
  4. Repeat for each field at your venue.

Name fields the way your venue signs them. Volunteers and teams hear the name announced and see it on the queue display, the match list, and reports.

Field Types

  • Alliance: Receives practice, qualification, and elimination matches. When you click Create Matches on the Creating Matches step, matches are assigned to your alliance fields in rotation, in the order the fields appear here. Elimination matches are placed the same way. If there are no alliance fields, matches are created without a field.
  • Solo: Used for solo matches. At least one team and one solo field are required before solo matches can be created. See Solo Matches.

Which roles can run a field's timer depends on its type. The Solo-Only Scorekeeper role can control solo fields but not alliance fields. See Roles and Permissions.

If a field is shared between alliance and solo matches at different times of day, set it to Alliance so it receives scheduled matches, and switch it to Solo when the solo session begins.

Renaming and Removing Fields

To rename a field, click in its Field Name box, type the new name, and click or tab out of the box. The field's display group is renamed to match.

To remove a field, click the trash button at the end of its row. Its tooltip reads Delete followed by the field's name. The field and its display group are removed immediately, with no confirmation step. Matches already assigned to a deleted field keep their assignment until the match list is recreated.

Display Groups

Each field has a display group named after it. The group is created with the field, renamed when the field is renamed, and removed when the field is deleted. Assign the screen beside the field to that group so it can show the field timer, match intro, and results for that field. See Displays.

Remarks

Add fields before you create matches. Fields added afterwards do not receive any of the matches already created until you click Create Matches again on the Matches step.

Keep the number of alliance fields in mind when you set cycle times on the Schedule step. Matches are assigned to fields in turn, so two fields let you use a shorter cycle time than one.
